The Institute for HIV Research and Treatment

Davies Medical Center founded the Institute for HIV Research and Treatment to provide a comprehensive network of medical services for people with AIDS and those who test positive for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The Institute is also dedicated to advancing clinical knowledge through AIDS research.
Commitment to Patient Care
As early as 1981, Davies Medical Center was caring for the AIDS patient and today is one of the largest treatment centers of its kind on the west coast. Davies was the first medical center in the country to administer ganciclovir to a patient with cytomegaloviral retinitis. CMV retinitis had formerly led uniformly to total blindness. The Medical Center recently led the way in providing lower cost AZT treatment. Davies also pioneered alternative treatment such as aerosolized Pentamidine for the prevention of pneumonia in patients allergic to the standard medications. Our years of expertise in treating AIDS has resulted in methods for earlier detection, refined treatment plans and reduced hospital stays for people with AIDS.
Dedication to Research
In addition to providing exceptional patient care, the Institute for HIV Research and Treatment is also dedicated to advancing treatment methods through research. Under the leadership of our medical director, often in cooperation with other physicians at Davies, the Institute participates in various drug trials and protocols. These involve many areas relating to HIV medicine, including new anti-HIV drugs, new drugs for the prevention of the opportunistic infections, new treatment of opportunistic infections as well as new treatments for the cancers seen in persons with AIDS. Many of these drug trials have open enrollment periods and are publicized on our web site as well as through the press, newsletters and physician offices. Participation in these drug studies not only allows us to contribute to the growing body of medical information on AIDS but also enables patients to benefit directly from recent research findings.
Medical Staff
The strength of the Institute for HIV Research and Treatment is our network of private practice physicians. Currently, Davies has a staff of over forty physicians with expertise in treating HIV conditions. This physician network has become a forum for the interchange of medical knowledge on AIDS. In addition, Davies Medical Center maintains a full staff of physicians representing virtually every medical specialty -- providing an excellent resource for the primary care physician involved with treating the AIDS patient.
