The San Francisco Institute for Plastic Surgery

The Institute offers both aesthetically-based surgery for cosmetic purposes, and reconstructive surgery following traumatic injury. Plastic Surgery is a medical specialty that seeks to improve physical function or to minimize disfigurement or scarring resulting from accidents, disease or birth defects. The word plastic is derived from Greek, meaning molding or giving form. Plastic Surgery includes aesthetic surgery, popularly known as cosmetic surgery, which can reshape facial and bodily features and is designed to improve an individual's appearance. The San Francisco Institute was inaugurated in 1989 to offer comprehensive reconstructive and plastic surgery to a wide range of patients seeking to enhance their appearance and function.

Comprehensive Care
By virtue of its location at Davies, the Institute provides its patients with the backing, support and staff of a major Medical Center. In addition to our world-renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeons, Davies' anesthesiologists, specially trained nurses and highly qualified physical and occupational therapists work closely with patients of the Institute to provide optimal support and follow-up to surgical and other procedures. The Medical Center's radiology department, general laboratory, hard therapy clinic, and its highly respected microsurgical laboratory provide on-site, state of the art medical assistance to patients who choose to be treated at the Institute.

Face-to-Face Consultation
When you become a patient at the Institute, your doctors will not be scattered at different hospitals or private clinics. Our plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgeons are able to walk across the hall to consult with each other, and with you, about the best plan of treatment for your condition. For example, a facial condition may require skin grafts, oral/maxillofacial surgery and aesthetic surgery. Doctors in each of these specialties hold regular, face-to-face consultation with each other about their patients.
A Wealth of Experience
The entire range of modern plastic and reconstructive surgical techniques is offered at the Institute. No problem is too complex for treatment. Working together, each specialty team composed of radiologists, pathologists, surgeons and nurses offer comprehensive diagnosis and treatment, as well as complete preoperative and postoperative care. For over fifteen years, Davies Medical Center has been a recognized world leader in microsurgery and the transplantation of living tissue.
Safety and Care
The San Francisco Institute for Plastic Surgery offers patients the safety of surgery in the fully equipped operating room of a major hospital, as well as the privacy and personal care available in a small office setting. Hospital rooms and guest rooms are available for daily and overnight stays so that healing can be fully monitored in maximum comfort and safety. The nurses, technicians and physicians who will care for you are all specially trained in plastic or reconstructive surgery. All of our physicians are board-certified in their specialties.
Deciding On Surgery
You may contact an individual specialist at the Institute directly or simple call the general number (415) 565-6064 and you will be referred to the appropriate Division for a formal consultation with a surgeon. During your consultation, you should discuss candidly your expectations about looking, feeling and functioning better after surgery while keeping in mind that the reasonable result is improvement, no perfection. After examining you, your surgeon will discuss what variables may bear on your decision to have surgery. Your surgeon will also explain specific aspects of your case, such as what techniques will be used, the role of anesthesia, where the operation will be performed and what you can realistically expect as a result. Feel free to discuss any other concerns about your surgery at this time, including risk and cost. If as second opinion is required by your insurance carrier, this can be provide by another member of the Institute or by any physician you select.
